Deseret News/Jay Evensen: Will stadium controversy wane?

If you've read my columns through the years, you'll know I strongly opposed public funding for construction of the new Real Salt Lake soccer stadium in Sandy. It was nothing personal toward Dave Checketts or the sport of soccer. I can cite several studies by independent economists showing that the public doesn't get any benefit out of such deals. Instead the public just loses money and lines the pockets of team owners.

RSL Looks to Conjure up Win against Kansas City Wizards on Saturday

After returning to the win column last weekend, Real Salt Lake (3-5-2, 11 pts.) will look to post back-to-back victories for the first time in 2008 this Saturday, June 7, when Utah’s side welcomes the Kansas City Wizards (3-4-2, 11 pts.) for their lone visit to the Wasatch Front during the 2008 campaign. Gates at Rice-Eccles Stadium and the popular Carnival Real fan festival area will open at 6:00 p.m. MT on Saturday evening, and tickets for the 7:00 p.m. kick-off on the hill are still available and can be purchased by calling the RSL Offices at 801-924-8585, in person at the RSL Front Office at 515 S. 700 East, Suite #2R (Trolley Corners building) in downtown Salt Lake City, or online by visiting the “TICKETS” section of www.RealSaltLake.com.

Fans that can’t make it to the match can tune in to RSL’s official radio partners – KALL 700 Sports (English) and Ke Buena 1600 AM (Spanish) – with KALL 700 Sports’ coverage beginning with RSL First Kick at 6:00 p.m. In addition, fans can watch the match as the action happens through the MLS Direct Kick (DIRECTV, DISH Network, & iN Demand) and MLSLIVE.tv (online) pay-per-view packages.

Real Salt Lake and Kansas City will bookend the month of June with their two scheduled meetings this season, with the return match at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan., coming on June 28. Real Salt Lake will have an opportunity to even up the all-time series against the Wizards, which RSL currently trails by a 2-3-1 margin. Real Salt Lake is 2-1-0 against Kansas City at Rice-Eccles Stadium, having picked up wins in each of the last two seasons (3-1 W on 8/29/07 and 2-1 W on 5/20/06) after dropping a 4-2 result in 2005 (8/13/05). In last year’s RSL win at Rice-Eccles it was DF Matias Mantilla getting Salt Lake on the board early, as his header 40 seconds in started off the scoring, while MF Andy Williams’ 55-yard laser in the 85th minute provided an entertaining insurance tally to secure the win for the home squad.

Real Salt Lake players and coaches will be out and about the Wasatch Front this week before tackling the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday in their lone meeting at Rice-Eccles Stadium during the 2008 season.

What: RSL GK Chris Seitz will be assisting with a soccer clinic held next Monday at the Daybreak Community Center, where he will coach and sign autographs for all in attendance from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

What: The KALL 700 Sports RSL Coach’s Corner will return next Tuesday, June 10, from 6:00-7:00 p.m., with the “Voice of RSL”, Bill Riley, joining RSL Head Coach Jason Kreis and FW Kenny Deuchar to break down this weekend’s match versus the Kansas City Wizards and take a look ahead to the next game against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. The Real Salt Lake Communications Department will announce the venue for next week’s RSL Coach’s Corner in the upcoming days so that fans can join the RSL contingent in person to ask their questions on all things Real Salt Lake.

Major League Soccer Communications: RSL forward Findley is Player of Week

NEW YORK -- Real Salt Lake forward Robbie Findley was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 10 of the 2008 season. Findley was the catalyst for Real Salt Lake's 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, after he entered the game at halftime and scored the game's first goal and provided the assist on the game winning goal last Saturday.

"I wasn't here when all the shenanigans or whatever you want to call it were going on and how the stadium got funded," he said. "But it is funded now, so what I want to do is want to try to make it a great facility for the community and a great facility for us."




Among some of the creative ideas Manning said RSL has to enhance its brand among the area's sports franchises is to develop its own recipe for fry sauce sold at home games.

In addition, Manning said he would like to market the team to a larger fan base, by targeting the Salt Lake Valley's growing soccer-hungry Latino population. He also wants to align the team with "American Idol" finalist David Archuleta.

What a great time, I thoroughly enjoyed that game! First thing, I picked up some Winger's wings before I got to the stadium for the tailgate, I love their wings. As soon as I got there, the Fox Soccer Channel team was there lead by Brian Dunseth. I got to ask a question on camera, not sure really what I said or how I did, but it was sort of cool. The tailgate was great, but some of our missing comrades (Judge) sort of brought it down. Our drummer was also missing, which really made a difference at the stadium, we couldn't really keep together as a group without the drums.

Keepin' it Real/Darin Hoopes: A Real World Review

What's right in the Real World: While no one, rightfully so, is talking about RSL being a lock for the playoffs after Saturday’s win it was good to see them get the win in a game they should. Their play was unconvincing in the first half, but they certainly stepped up in the second half. This might have been a small step in their effort to become a playoff contender, but was pretty important considering the potential effects of a tie or a loss.

Coupled with his beautiful one-touch assist to Javi Morales for RSL’s second goal, Robbie’s strike has also earned him MLS Player of the Week honors. He becomes the first Real player given the award so far this year as his performance catapulted the squad to a much needed home victory. Congratulations Robbie, it’s well deserved.
