Our Sports Central: Sounders Receive Former #1 Pick Nikolas Besagno on Loan

(Seattle, WA)- The Seattle Sounders have received midfielder, Nikolas Besagno, the former number one pick in the 2005 MLS Superdraft, on loan from Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer, the team announced today. The loan deal starts immediately and runs through September 8, 2008.

"It's a bonus for us to add a local young man with quality and potential to the roster in these times where, through injury, the roster is extremely thin," Coach Schmetzer said. "Nik will be a welcome addition and I hope that he will be able to have some impact in the time he's on loan from Real Salt Lake."

Sebastian Schindzielorz Trains in SLC


Deseret News/James Edward: RSL pursuing former Bundesliga player

Midfielder Sebastian Schindzielorz, who played most recently in the Greek second division, is training with RSL on a trial basis this week.

Salt Lake has an open roster spot after trading Carey Talley to Chivas USA last month for a future draft pick. If all goes well with Schindzielorz's trial this week, Lagerwey said the club hopes to get started on his U.S. work visa as soon as possible so he's available to play when the summer transfer window opens on July 15.

RSL MF Andy Williams Called into Jamaican National Team for World Cup Qualifiers

Real Salt Lake MF Andy Williams today was named to the Jamaican National Team squad that will begin the island nation’s march towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a pair of CONCACAF region qualifiers against the Bahamas next week. Williams will depart Salt Lake City on Thursday for Jamaica, where the “Reggae Boyz” and the Bahamas will square off in a pair of contests on Sunday, June 15, at Independence Park in Kingston and Wednesday, June 18, at Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny. The victor of that series will advance to CONCACAF’s semifinal round of qualifying, which will be contested in a home-and-away, round-robin format featuring three groups of four teams, with the top two squads in each group advancing to the final round.

The 30-year-old Williams ended his two-year retirement from international soccer last Tuesday, when he played the full 90 minutes for Jamaica in its 5-1 victory over St. Vincent & the Grenadines in Kingston. That game marked Williams’ 83rd appearance for the Reggae Boyz since making his debut in 1998, which is when newly-reappointed Jamaica head coach Rene Simoes led the squad to its lone World Cup appearance in France. During his absence, Williams will miss Real Salt Lake’s next two contests – this Saturday’s road match at Chivas USA and next Wednesday’s contest at home against the San Jose Earthquakes.

This was a frustrating game…I felt this was an opportunity for RSL to show well against an organized defense. They created more than their share of opportunities, but ultimately failed to finish well. RSL had some great opportunities 1 v 1 and were ultimately denied.

Our offense needs to get it in gear, and we need some one to step up and be a difference maker for this team. Blanco, Beckham, Oduro, Kenny Cooper and others have all scored against RSL in incredible fashion to change the game and get a result they didn't deserve (Cooper aside). Every game we won, we should have won. Every game we've tied, we should have won. Every game we've lost, we should have lost. We need someone to step up and energize the team to get results. We've played consistently and even downright boring a few times. This has to change. Who's going to step up for RSL?
